Longmen Grottoes

The Longmen Grottoes extend along the cliffs on both banks of the Yi River near Luoyang, Henan. Caves, niches, sculptures, dedicatory inscriptions and stelae created across multiple dynasties form the heritage ensemble. It is not only Fengxian Temple or the Vairocana Buddha, and one image cannot stand for the site's chronological, religious and artistic layers.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Read Longmen through river, bank, zone, cave, niche, image and inscription. Establish the Yi River and cliff setting, then enter one formally named or numbered cave. Record cave structure, niche position, relations among principal and attendant figures, and donor or dedicatory inscriptions separately. Size, subject and style must attach to a specific object. Religious interpretation, political context and art-historical judgment need cited evidence rather than conclusions drawn from a photographed expression.

03

Continuity and learning

Longmen conservation addresses rock stability, weathering, water, visitor pressure, historical repairs and dispersed objects. Learners should distinguish in-situ originals, historical photographs, rubbings, replicas, digital reconstructions and objects held elsewhere, recording identifiers, institution and date. Lighting, scaffolding, cave closures, tickets and walking routes are time-sensitive. Visitors should not touch sculpture or cliff surfaces, and a magnified digital image is not the material object itself.
