Chinese calligraphy is a living artistic practice that organizes Chinese characters through brushwork, strokes, structure and composition. It is not simply neat handwriting, and no single script style represents the whole tradition.

What to notice

A calligraphic work can be read through character, brush, structure, line, composition and inscription. Identify the text and script, observe how starts, turns, pressure and speed shape strokes, then compare character structure, movement between characters, whole-page composition, signatures and seals. Script names are entry points; date, attribution and whether an object is an original, copy or rubbing still require catalogues and institutional evidence.

03

Continuity and learning

Calligraphy continues through copying, creation, exhibitions, education and digital circulation. Learners should distinguish originals, hand copies, engraved models, rubbings, print reproductions and digital fonts, naming the work, maker, collection and image version. Cursive script is not random scribbling, and one copy exercise does not replace sustained brush training.
