02

What to notice

Paper-cut can be studied through paper, folding, cutting or chiselling, solid and open space, motif and use. Record material and colour, check whether the work is folded or symmetrical, identify the edges left by different tools, and see how retained paper and openings form the image together. Meaning must return to the maker, region and use; a flower, bird, fish or character does not carry one automatic nationwide interpretation.

03

Continuity and learning

Paper-cut continues through families, communities, bearers, schools, exhibitions and contemporary design. Learners should distinguish handmade originals, template exercises, machine cutting, printed patterns and digital images, crediting makers and respecting copyright in contemporary works. One basic folding exercise does not demonstrate mastery of a regional tradition.

Chinese calligraphy is a living artistic practice that organizes Chinese characters through brushwork, strokes, structure and composition. It is not simply neat handwriting, and no single script style represents the whole tradition.
