Chinese seal engraving primarily combines stone, the engraving knife and Chinese characters, bringing calligraphic structure, seal-face composition and carving action into a small surface. It developed from ancient seal making, but artistic engraving is not identical with every seal, and one impression alone cannot establish date or authenticity.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Read a seal through text, script, face, knife, side inscription and impression. Verify the inscription and transcription, then observe how script, density, response and empty space work within the seal face. Distinguish the design, reversed transfer, knife marks, side inscription, carved stone and paper impression. Terms such as relief and intaglio must be tied to a specific object and source; red and white pixels on a screen do not replace evidence about material, scale and carved traces.

Continuity and learning

Seal engraving continues through societies, gatherings, creation, exhibitions, education, documentation and digital circulation. Soft practice materials can introduce reversal and composition, while knives, seal vices, stone and paste require tool safety, ventilation and material guidance. Copies should identify their model and version, and contemporary works require attribution and copyright respect. Heritage authentication, a seal's legal force and chemical safety belong to relevant professionals, not an introductory exercise.

Chinese calligraphy is a living artistic practice that organizes Chinese characters through brushwork, strokes, structure and composition. It is not simply neat handwriting, and no single script style represents the whole tradition.
