Qi Baishi

Qi Baishi (dated 1863–1957 by the Palace Museum and 1864–1957 by the National Art Museum of China) was a modern painter, calligrapher, seal engraver and poet. He began as a decorative carpenter and developed a distinctive artistic language through travel, residence in Beijing and his late-life reform. He cannot be reduced to 'the shrimp painter,' while the title, date, medium, inscription, seals, attribution and image version of any work require separate verification.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Observe a Qi Baishi work through title, date, medium, dimensions, subject, brushwork, inscription, seals and collection number. Begin with a museum record or label, then identify the specific combination of expressive flowers, aquatic animals, meticulous insects, landscape, figures, calligraphy and seal engraving. Ink tone, paper texture, seal colour and signature on a screen are observations from an image. Stylistic comparison can support interpretation but cannot replace provenance, material evidence and authentication procedures.

Continuity and learning

Qi Baishi's art circulates through original exhibitions, collotype and printed reproductions, textbooks, stamps, digital images, copies and commercial motifs. Record institution, object number, photographic or scan version, exhibition date and permission, separating originals, reproductions, study copies, attributed works and commercial adaptations. 'In the style of Qi Baishi' is not an authentication result, and display rotation or access to memorial sites and museums requires dated checks.

Chinese seal engraving primarily combines stone, the engraving knife and Chinese characters, bringing calligraphic structure, seal-face composition and carving action into a small surface. It developed from ancient seal making, but artistic engraving is not identical with every seal, and one impression alone cannot establish date or authenticity.

Chinese calligraphy is a living artistic practice that organizes Chinese characters through brushwork, strokes, structure and composition. It is not simply neat handwriting, and no single script style represents the whole tradition.
