Nanjing City Culture

Nanjing lies on the lower Yangtze, where the Yangtze, Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and surrounding hills form an environmental base beneath successive capital and urban layers associated with the Six Dynasties, Southern Tang, Ming and Republican periods. Walls, axes, lanes, literary activity and resident memory can illuminate one another, but no dynasty, wall segment or old street represents the whole city.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Read Nanjing through river, tributary, lake, hill, city, wall, axis, street, lane and literature. Locate the Yangtze, Qinhuai, Xuanwu Lake and hills, then select one sourced historical layer, wall or axis, lane and literary activity. Label whether each connection comes from regulation, map, local chronicle, text, oral account or direct observation. A link inferred from spatial proximity remains an interpretation rather than the city's one definitive story.

03

Continuity and learning

Historic-city conservation in Nanjing operates alongside residential life, public reading, transport, tourism and neighbourhood renewal. Record legal protection, historical documentation, personal memory and same-day observation separately, respecting interview privacy and community or religious use. Exhibitions, events, venue access, wall entrances and construction diversions are time-sensitive. Ancient names and texts may be reusable, but modern editions, photographs, maps and oral recordings still require version, attribution and permission checks.

Craftsmanship of Nanjing Yunjin Brocade

Nanjing Yunjin brocade craftsmanship uses a complex large loom, coordinated work by two operators and methods including continuous warp with discontinuous weft to organize materials such as silk, gold thread and peacock-feather yarn. It connects material preparation, pattern design, pattern programming, loom construction and weaving, and is not a name for every textile or brocade made in Nanjing.

郑和

Zheng He

云南、南京与印度洋航路 · Yunnan, Nanjing and routes across the Indian Ocean11 分钟

Zheng He (1371–1433) was a Ming envoy and fleet commander who helped lead seven voyages between 1405 and 1433, linking ports in Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Arabian Sea and East Africa. These state missions relied on existing maritime routes, collaborative crews and many ports; they were not one man's solitary discovery of an unknown ocean.
