VERIFIED NOTES
Historical context
The Grand Canal is a vast inland waterway system running from Beijing to Zhejiang across eight present-day provincial-level regions. Sections were built from the fifth century BCE, and a unified communication system emerged under the Sui dynasty.
02
What to notice
The Grand Canal was not dug once in a single period and left unchanged. It is best read as a network of sections, locks, water-supply works, granaries, wharves and cities across historical layers. Water in a channel or navigation today does not by itself prove that its alignment, engineering form and function are identical to those of the past.
03
Continuity and learning
The World Heritage property is a bounded serial selection, not every waterway called a canal. Study records should name the section, place, period and later alterations, separating historical documents, physical remains, current observation and inference. Water quality, navigation, access and transport information require dated checks.
