Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor

The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor at Lintong, Xi'an, is an extensive funerary landscape of the burial mound, architectural remains, accessory pits and excavated objects. Terracotta Warrior Pits 1, 2 and 3 are major components rather than the whole property. The World Heritage site cannot be reduced to rows of figures, and unexcavated areas cannot be described as observed fact.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Map the site through mausoleum boundary, mound, architecture, accessory pit, excavated unit, conservation and display. Locate an object within the funerary landscape, then record pit, trench or find number. Separate pose, clothing, fragments, pigment traces, weapons and associated finds. Varied faces do not give every figure a known personal identity, while reconstructions of formations, workshop organization and status must correspond to archaeological reports and stated levels of evidence.

03

Continuity and learning

After excavation, Qin objects pass through cleaning, recording, stabilization, joining, restoration and environmental control, with surviving pigments especially fragile. Learners should distinguish excavated originals, restored assemblies, replicas, digital reconstructions and commercial imagery, recording pit, object number, institution and image date. New excavation results, display rotation, open areas, booking and transport are time-sensitive. Visitors must not cross barriers or touch objects, and commercial reconstructions are not archaeological conclusions.

Zhang Qian was a Western Han envoy sent west from Chang'an by Emperor Wu in 138 BCE. His missions expanded Han knowledge and official contacts, but the Silk Roads were a long-forming network with earlier exchanges and many participants, not the creation of one traveller.
