张骞

Zhang Qian

Zhang Qian was a Western Han envoy sent west from Chang'an by Emperor Wu in 138 BCE. His missions expanded Han knowledge and official contacts, but the Silk Roads were a long-forming network with earlier exchanges and many participants, not the creation of one traveller.

VERIFIED NOTES

What to notice

Reconstructing an ancient mission means separating the original order, actual destinations, eyewitness observations, second-hand reports and information presented after return. A straight line on a study map cannot replace the network shaped by mountains, oases, polities, seasons and intermediary traders. Original aim, immediate outcome and long-term effect also require separate judgments.

03

Continuity and learning

The historical label 'opening a passage' is important, yet it should not become a hero narrative in which one person creates the whole Silk Roads. Place Zhang within a network of Han envoys, local polities, guides and traders, and note that identifications between ancient and modern place names may change with research. Modern routes, exhibitions and commemorations are time-sensitive and cannot prove ancient details.
