Tu Youyou is a Chinese pharmaceutical scientist who led a team within the nationwide Project 523 collaboration from clues about qinghao to the extraction, testing and development of artemisinin in the 1970s. She received half of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for a novel therapy against malaria. The achievement is a chain from traditional textual inspiration to modern experimental and clinical evidence.

Artemisinin derivatives are used chiefly in artemisinin-based combination therapies for confirmed malaria under applicable clinical guidance.
