Harbin's modern urban layers grew from its Songhua River setting, railway-era movement, historic districts such as Central Street, industrial life and ice-and-snow culture. It is not a European-style city that exists only in winter, but a Northeast Chinese city continually shaped by communities, architectural traditions and contemporary life.
