Guangzhou's city culture follows the Pearl River to connect ancient ports and maritime trade, historic axes and commercial districts, Lingnan arts and contemporary market life. Guangzhou is an important centre of Lingnan culture, but it is not the whole Lingnan region.

Guangzhou can be read along a river-port-axis-street-market route. The Pearl River and changing shorelines provide water coordinates; ports and commercial remains connect wider exchange; historic axes, arcades and districts reveal urban form; markets, teahouses and neighbourhoods preserve daily rhythms. Cantonese opera, Guangzhou embroidery, Guangdong music and other traditions each require project- and place-specific evidence rather than one broad 'Lingnan' label.
